Note from Empowered Women’s Channel HQ: We have had this blog ready to post for sometime now but have had so many other great articles to post that we had not gotten around to posting this one yet! Now, in light of seeing this topic on the Dr. Oz show, we feel it’s a great time to share this topic in confirmation of what Dr. Oz shared in regards to controversial issue.
The Corset Diet
Harmful effects of corsets and foundation garments on your health
If you have not already heard about the Corset Diet, I assure you that is a good thing. However, if you have heard about the Corset Diet, hopefully a red flag was lifted. The Corset Diet is a diet where you wear a tight corset (girdle) and eat a “specialized” diet to slim the waist. Some people who promote the Corset Diet say that their diet is approved by doctors and dietitians. This is very misleading, as the “diet” may be approved by doctors and dietitians, however the corset wearing I would hope is not part of that approval. This diet claims that you will instantly loose weight and look slimmer in just a few weeks! You may indeed “look” slimmer but the cost of what this diet does to your body is not worth the results that you will get. Slimming your waist drastically by morphing your body from a tight corset does not make your inside organs look so great. In order to diminish the size of your waist, the corset squeezes your organs and changes their structure inside the body while shifting them to a different area than they are naturally supposed to be. Most of your vital organs are in this area; organs such as your liver, kidney, gallbladder, and small and large intestines are all located here and effected by the compression of this garment. In addition to your organs, your rib cage and lungs can also be transfigured by a corset. This effects how these organs function and overall how your body performs.
The result of this constriction not only effects your organs but other critical systems in your body such as your lymph which is in charge of your body’s elimination process. Poorly working organs and sluggish lymph flow and detoxification can be detrimental to your health.
Other restrictive garments
Corsets are not the only garments that restrict and effect our organs. Garments many women wear on a daily basis such as foundation garments, body forming pantyhose, “Spanx”, and compression garments all essentially squeeze your body in an unnatural way. These garments have become a staple in many women’s wardrobe second to their underwear. Not only do these garments constrict your body, they suffocate your skin and do not allow it to breathe. The skin is the largest eliminative organ in our body, in charge of cleaning our body from toxins, waste and so much more; just as our liver, gallbladder, kidneys and intestines do. We sometimes forget all of the responsibilities the skin carries out each day. We primarily think of the skin as a barrier for our body in protecting us from outside toxins, afflictions, environment, etc; so when you realize just how much the skin is in charge of why would you want to jeopardize that?
Rather you are aware of the harmful effects of these garments or not, why do women put themselves into these torture chambers? They are definitely not comfortable, you can barely breathe in them! So why do we wear them? In the name of “looking good” for what society is portraying as beautiful? At what point do we come together and say “this is ridiculous! And something has got to change!”?
Don’t just take our word for it! Check out this great snippet of the Dr. Oz Show showing just what happens to your body from squeezing into these tight compression garments:
Note from the author:
At what cost are women going to continue to follow such trends as the Corset Diet? Please keep in mind the harm that you are doing to your body the next time you go to squeeze into these garments. Take the stance to not support these products and help to spread the word to those who may not know the effects they may cause. Be the change you wish to see and help others to be that change too!
